Rock Fantasia Opus 9 - Importado

Wurtemberg is a group centred around noted maker of medieval instruments Alain Carbonare. The group combines the sounds of Carbonare´s medieval instruments with more contemporary rock instruments. Rock Fantasia Opus 9 is their debut album which pretty much sank without a trace in France, only to gain a cult following in Japan. The album explores a number of different styles, but generally has a sound that reminds me of what In Spe were to do on their debut album several years later. Unfortunately, Wurtemberg don´t do it quite as well. The music has a feeling of being played too rigidly on tempo, making the music sound to my ears synthetic rather than organic. There are exceptions to this; the piano seems a little freer, and Michault-Bonnet on flute and saxophone is excellent throughout.
